At 2pm on Thursday 23rd of April I was sitting in a coffee shop, prepping Sunday’s Durham v Sheffield United for the WSL2.
A call came from DAZN’s National League producer. Lost in the poor signal of my local Cafe Nero he told me of the (excellent) booked commentator being unable to do Saturday’s 12pm kick off - could I step in and cover the game?
It was Rochdale v York, two sides separated by only 2 points meeting on the final day. One match, One spot for the NL title, and promotion back to the EFL.
I did not have long to prepare for a live broadcast in a league I knew, but hadn’t covered all season. I’d been working for DAZN on their Serie A and Arkema Premiere Ligue but I’d done no National League for them. It was a huge game.
When that 2pm call came on Thursday, I didn’t realise I would be commentating on football’s greatest ever finish, becoming a tiny footnote in this incredible event.
Radio 1. TalkSport. CBS. National News. Famous Australian, American and Africa social media stars using my commentary. Ridiculous.
